David Bennett and Mary Neher presented at the 2nd Annual HDD Academy on February 11 and 12 in Tempe, AZ. The two-day course included presentations from horizontal directional drilling experts on planning, design, and construction of HDD projects. Dr. Bennett discussed geotechnical site investigations and the impact of soil characteristics on HDD design, including evaluation of settlement risk. Ms. Neher discussed methods for evaluation of hydrofracture risk for HDD crossings, as well as methods for calculating pullback loads and pipe stresses during installation. The presentations were well received.
